OUR
CURRENT SHOW
“Photographic Watercolors”
by R. Geary Hoffman, a Suttons Bay, Michigan photographer.
June 7, 2009 through July 20, 2009
An opening reception for the artist, Geary Hoffman, will be held on Sunday, June 7, 2009 from noon until 4:00 p.m. as part of the First Sunday Gallery Walk.
Serendipity accounts for many of our “finds” at Mackerel Sky. Geary Hoffman is a neighbor to the mother of our manager, Mar Sibley, in Sutton’s Bay. This exhibit features Michigan farm and lake landscapes as well as birds and wildlife.
Previous to his recent retirement to Suttons Bay, Hoffman owned and operated a graphic design and photography firm near Chicago. The work he did there laid the groundwork for his current portfolio. Hoffman explains: “Photographic Watercolors is the name given my unique work. It begins with one of my original photographs, paintings, or drawings that is brought to the computer and artistically reworked using various imaging and art programs to resemble a fine watercolor painting. Contrary to common beliefs, this is not an automated task performed by software. It is a carefully orchestrated and executed manual technique...each piece takes many hours of work to create. Elements of several photographs may be combined to achieve my desired results and some pieces are further enhanced by hand with watercolor paints or other media. Each finished piece is unique and cannot be duplicated by applying the same technique to another picture.”
In addition to marveling at Geary Hoffman’s technique, the charming, and dramatic, scenes from the Great Lakes shorelines and northern farmlands will bring the summer longing to Michiganders who are drawn “Up North”. Please visit for a mini-vacation to the Lakes by viewing this beautiful work.
