Dust”
Hand-carved
stone sculpture by Maureen Bergquist Gray
June 1, 2008 through July 21, 2008
An opening reception for the artist, Maureen Bergquist Gray, will
be held on Sunday, June 1, 2008 from noon until 4:00 p.m. as part
of the First Sunday Gallery Walk.
Maureen Bergquist Gray should be described as a Michigan
artist. Originally from the Lansing area, she followed her muse
to Lake Superior and settled in Ishpeming a number of years ago.
With a plan to move to the Grand Traverse area in a few months,
calling her a Michigan artist will put her in the correct state
of the Union at least.
Maureen’s calling is to listen to the stones. Her style of
hand carving stone is recognizable after many years of experience.
She coaxes complex stories from pieces 6 inches tall and imbues
grace and sensuality into her 8 foot boulders. Her generosity of
spirit extends to the making of sculpture of all sizes as a method
of scaling beauty to any lifestyle. Consequently, this grouping
of sculpture will work in this exhibition space, your home, and
the outdoors.
Each of Maureen’s stones, no matter the size, begs to be caressed
and examined. With two large permanent multi-figures outdoor installations
in Flint, Michigan, her work also continues to be represented in
seasonal outdoor exhibits. All of these large pieces, though imposing,
invite contact. Maureen has been working on a two figure outdoor
